Yesterday’s reversal of his promise to allow Ukraine to build Patriot defense systems followed a call with the leader of the Russian war criminal regime. The reversal should provoke us to remember three things:

  1. Conservatives and Republicans have conceded a benchmark of American liberty by reinforcing the idea that one man – the president – can start wars, tariff nations, suspend treaties, etc. – by fiat – notwithstanding the unconstitutionality of such actions.
  2. Putin – not Laura Loomer, Melania, Congress – has ultimate sway with the American president on Ukraine.
  3. On even the most basic issue of protecting women and children from being murdered in their sleep by giving Ukraine defensive weapons, the Administration remains on the wrong side.

For Ukraine to produce the 1st patriot they’d need about 5 years. In that time they need a more urgent solution because the Russians won’t wait that out. There’s no reversal there were talks that continue. But in any event to advertise what kind of defense Ukraine will deploy against Russia in the press would render any system useless and effort meaningless. Russia will also have 5 years to find the production facilities and warehouses if Ukraine was to rely on this deal for self- defense. This may be a negotiating tactic with Russia or a total distraction as Zelensky and Ukraine were holding meetings with the Israelis whose systems Ukraine sought since the beginning and which are much more advanced, mobile, and cheaper than the 80s technology of the Patriots. In my view Poland or some other neighbors, Germany even should be making the Patriots because Ukraine is too vulnerable at this stage.

Another day in Kyiv comes with more good news – the Ukrainian company Fire Point has conducted the first flight test of the FP-7.x interceptor missile. Serial production of this lower-cost alternative to the Patriot system.

Fire Point says the FP-7.x is intended to counter Russian ballistic missile and drone threats at a fraction of the cost of existing western systems, such as Lockheed Martin’s Patriot and the Franco-Italian SAMP-T, and could eventually be produced in far larger numbers, according to the Financial Times (FT)👇

Mass production of the missile could begin this Aug, Fire Point’s co-founder Denys Shtilierman said, pending the delivery of an infrared seeker for guidance, which Fire Point was hoping to source from Germany’s Diehl Defence. The completed missiles would be ready by 2027, he said.

DW Phillips :

BREAKING: What we learned from today’s Camp David Press Conference.

  1. UNWILLINGNESS TO SHARE VALUABLE TECH WITH AN ALLY: The president said that he was concerned about giving Patriot missile technology to Ukraine, should Ukraine pose a military threat to the US.

MISLEADING: The expense of building patriots from scratch is so exorbitant that even if tech knowledge is given to Ukraine, their ability to develop the systems is a question mark. That being said, it is the ownership of the defensive weapon, not the tech which has immediate consequences, none of which are potential acts of aggression against the US. Under Trump and prior Administrations, countries that operate or have been approved to receive U.S. Patriot systems include a long list of nations: Germany, Poland, Spain, Romania, Korea, Japan, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Israel, Sweden and Saudi Arabia.

  1. FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT RUSSIAN INVASION: He falsely claimed that the reason Ukraine was not conquered in one day by Russia, was because he gave Ukraine javelins which allowed Ukrainians to take out Russian tanks which were stuck in the mud.

TRUTH: Ukraine’s successful defense around Kyiv resulted from years of military reform, multiple rounds of Western assistance under successive U.S. administrations, British and other allied support, Ukrainian ingenuity and courage, civilian support and significant Russian mistakes. The Javelin was one of the iconic weapons of that campaign, but it was part of a much broader defensive effort. During his original presidency, Trump only supplied 37 Javelin launch units and 210 missiles to Ukraine.

  1. FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT UKRAINIAN MILITARY CASUALTIES. He presented false information about casualties, indicating that Ukrainian casualties were about 30,000 soldiers last month, which should incentivize Kyiv to sue for peace.

FACT- BASED ESTIMATES

Ukraine
June: approximately 1,800–2,800 killed
July: approximately 2,000–3,000 killed

Russia
June: approximately 5,000–8,000 killed
July: approximately 6,000–9,000 killed

The number of overall casualties (killed, wounded and captured) is much higher.

  1. FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT UKRAINIAN CIVILIAN DEATH: President Trump downplayed the existence of civilian casualties caused by Russian attacks on Ukraine, claiming that casualties “are almost entirely soldiers.”

TRUTH: Trump’s statements are grossly inaccurate. In June and July, Putin’s attacks on civilians resulted in nearly 5,000 casualties.

Killed: ~670
Injured: ~4,100

Total casualties: ~4,800

These means that roughly 20% of the estimated total of 25,000 Ukrainian casualties for June and July (killed, wounded and captured) 20% of Ukraine’s casualties were non-combatant children, women and men. This number does not take into consideration the murders, injuries and kidnappings which occurred during those months by Russians against Ukrainians in the occupied areas.

………………

This is a Mistake – Loomer Persuades Trump to Send Witkoff and Kushner to Kyiv

In the mind of a MAGA insider recently converted to the cause of Ukraine, Laura Loomer, Trump sending Witkoff and Kushner to Kyiv is a win. The press reports and President Zelensky confirms that such a visit is possible within the next two weeks.

I have real concerns.

Both men are unaccountable, unelected individuals, never confirmed by the Senate, wielding immense power.

Both men are deeply financially connected to the president and to Russia.

Witkoff has proven himself repeatedly to be a sycophant for Putin and a disinformation-spouting enemy of Kyiv.

Neither men are likely to have a “come to Jesus” moment in Kyiv. Their words and deed, personal relationship with Putin and Russian oligarchs, and their financial opportunism make that an improbability.

What is more likely is that they will use the trip to undermine Kyiv, further destabilize American confidence in Kyiv, and push harder on the Russian “peace proposals.”

Next to JD Vance, they are the two men working with Trump that are least qualified to evaluate Ukraine based on a trip to Kyiv.

This is not the “ask” we want with Trump.

Of course, the biggest reason is what few on Capitol Hill are willing to discuss – there can be no peace until Russia is defeated and their withdrawal from Ukraine. The defeat of Russia is the only proper peace objective.
