Russian Buryatia has been suffering from massive flooding for the third day in a row. In connection with this, a state of emergency was declared in the entire republic on August 3.

Tsydenov reported that due to precipitation, traffic on the Ulan-Ude – Chita highway was also stopped.

The local prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the dam break at the Khonkholoy Reservoir.

Traffic on the federal highway “Baikal” has been completely stopped, and authorities recommend using alternative routes. Bridges over the rivers Tugnui, Sukhara and Khonkholoika have been seriously damaged.

More than 200 local residents were evacuated from the flooded areas. Video from Buryatia shows how streams of water are washing away potato fields and cattle that are encountered in their path. The houses of local residents are flooded and cellars are flooded.

Local residents are desperate and are planning to build dams themselves to save the harvest. They report that water has already flooded potato fields and vegetable gardens in some settlements. Residents are also advised to drive livestock away from the fields as quickly as possible – those who fail to do so risk losing their animals.
