Fire in Chernobyl Zone Spreads over 100 Hectares. Radiation 10 Times the Norm

The fire that broke out in the Chernobyl exclusion zone on April 4 has spread over 100 hectares, with the radiation in the center greatly exceeding the norm.

This was reported by the head of the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine Yehor Firsov, NV informs.

The radiation meter indicated the level to be 2.3, whilst the norm is 0.14. Aviation was engaged in the extinguishment and over 50 tons of water has already been used.

Firsov called this situation a consequence of the neglectful activities of the locals.

“The MPs have to raise the penalties for arson by 50-100 times. The current fines are negligible in comparison with those for not wearing a protective mask (up to $620),” he said in a comment to NV and added that the relevant bills already exist.

Forest fires in April? I smell more than smoke, I smell Russian involvement.

Although, foccusser has got a point I could also envision the locals for being the guilty parties for theses fires. I once visited the lake region just to the south of the exclusion zone and was disgusted by the trash that the people leave in the forests after their fishing, camping or barbecuing trips.
