Finnish President Sauli Niiniste on Sunday, May 15, said that the country’s leadership had decided to formally apply for NATO membership.

It is reported by  Yle .

According to the Finnish leader, a lot has changed since the day Russia invaded Ukraine. He emphasized once again: Finland’s application is not directed against anyone.

“This is a historic day. A new era is beginning. Security is not a zero-sum game. When Finland’s security is at its maximum, overall security is enhanced,” Niiniste said.

  1. I’m conflicted. I’m happy for Finland but where was NATO for Ukraine? I continue to believe NATO is a waste and Ukraine needs to align with countries of like cultures, values and BALLS.

  2. It’s nice to see Finland being accepted so quickly and without complications. Concurrently, it’s so deplorable that Ukraine was refused its application. This could have prevented this terrible war and could have saved many thousands of lives and preserved it from the destruction. Germany and France will never be forgiven for this unjust treatment, just like mafia land, naturally.
I hope that Ukraine will seek an alliance with other nations and not with NATO. Ukraine’s military deserves only the best and NATO has too many jellyfish armies.

  3. At the same time, he expressed the hope that Putin would not attack his country.

“Although I do not believe that Russia can attack Finland now or in the future, the political landscape in Europe and the world leaves no room for neutral countries,” Niiniste said.

Informing Putin in a telephone conversation about Finland’s decision to apply for NATO membership, Niiniste said he was surprised by the Russian president’s calm reaction.

“Actually, it was a surprise that he took it so calmly… But in security politics, especially when talking to Russia, you have to keep in mind that what he said does not mean that you should not be on your guard. But so far, it seems there are no immediate problems,” the President of Finland summed up.
