On the morning of June 18, Ukrainian drones launched a new series of strikes on Moscow. The target of the strike on the capital of the aggressor country was a large oil refinery.

The attack resulted in a massive fire, according to the monitoring channel Exilenova+.

Hitting results

At least two tanks caught fire at the Moscow Oil Refinery in the southeast of the Russian capital after a series of flights. Eyewitnesses posted a video online showing a large-scale fire on the territory of the enterprise.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced at around 5:00 a.m. that 15 UAVs flying towards Moscow had been destroyed by air defense systems. However, he soon admitted that the drones had reached their intended targets at an oil refinery.

“Air defense forces continue to repel the massive attack. Several drones managed to reach the MNPZ. Measures are being taken to eliminate the consequences,” Sobyanin said.

The attack was carried out in waves, starting at approximately 4:30 a.m. Moscow authorities claim that as of 6:40 a.m., at least 43 drones had allegedly been shot down by air defense forces as they approached and over the capital.

Fragments and debris from one of the downed drones fell on the territory of the Sadovod shopping complex. Minor damage to the facade and structure of one of the buildings is reported.

Due to the air attack, Rosaviatsia introduced the “Carpet” plan. The three main airports of the Moscow air hub – Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo – temporarily imposed restrictions. Departure and arrival flights were delayed or redirected to alternate airfields.

Eyewitnesses and OSINT-publics published footage of large columns of smoke over Kapotna. According to preliminary monitoring data, a strong fire was recorded.

The network notes that the refinery was tightly covered by air defense, but the drones broke deep into the facility, despite the stationary towers with Pantsir air defense systems installed around Kapotny and in neighboring areas.

Key facts about refineries

The Moscow Oil Refinery (MRPZ) in Kapotny, owned by Gazprom, is a strategic facility, critically important both in the daily life of the Russian capital and in the military logistics of the Central Region of the Russian Federation.

The plant’s installed design capacity is 11–12 million tons of oil per year. This is one of the largest, technologically advanced and at the same time compact refineries in the Russian Federation. The enterprise covers about 40% of Moscow’s needs for gasoline and up to 50% for diesel fuel. In fact, every third liter of fuel in the capital region is filled here.

The attacks on Kapotny hit the most vulnerable spots in Russia’s domestic economy. The outage of the Moscow Refinery forces the redirection of flows from the Yaroslavl and Ryazan refineries, which are also regularly attacked.

Despite the fact that Kapotnya is located in the rear, its shutdown affects the military potential of the aggressor. The Moscow Refinery is a key supplier of aviation kerosene for the Moscow aviation hub. Military airfields in the Moscow region are also supplied from this source. The shutdown of production forces kerosene to be transported by rail in tankers from other regions, which overloads the already scarce logistics of Russian Railways.

As a reminder, on the night of June 18, the Rostov region of the Russian Federation was attacked by unmanned aerial vehicles. The target of the attack was a fuel infrastructure facility in the settlement of Gukovo. After the UAVs arrived, a large-scale fire broke out at a local oil depot.

As OBOZ.UA reported, the occupiers in Crimea announced a “disruption” of gasoline supplies . In particular, this concerns Sevastopol. The occupation authorities stated that there is no point in local residents standing in queues at gas stations, since it is still impossible to get fuel.
