Also, European countries will increase spending on their own defense.

At the European summit held today in Britain , European countries agreed to both increase aid to Ukraine and increase spending on their own defense, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said, as quoted by The Guardian .

He said it had been a “very good” meeting and he had “every reason” to expect further announcements on increased defence spending by European countries.

“I heard new announcements at the table today, and I’m not going to announce them to you because they (European countries) have to do that [themselves], but it was very good news that more European countries will increase their defence spending,” Rutte said.

According to the NATO Secretary General, there is no draft peace agreement for Ukraine yet, but “we must prepare for this moment and make sure that European countries are ready to help with security guarantees.”

As Rutte noted, the allies want to “make sure that Putin never tries to attack Ukraine again” – because there will be “active Europeans in Ukraine.”

Urgent Ukraine summit in Britain

As UNIAN reported, against the backdrop of a sharp deterioration in relations between Ukraine and the United States, European countries gathered for an emergency summit to discuss further support for Kyiv’s defense efforts. After the meeting, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukraine should be turned into a “steel porcupine” so that Russia could not swallow it.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has already announced a £1.6 billion military aid package . This money will finance the production of British air defense missiles for Ukraine.
