What preceded
- European Union member states have received a request from Ukraine to use several billion euros from a loan totaling 90 billion euros to purchase PAC-3 missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
- Earlier, the European Commission received from Ukraine a list of weapons on which it is planned to spend the bulk of the 6 billion euros remaining in the defense part of the loan – most of the items concern equipment produced in Ukraine and the EU, mainly drones.
- President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Ukraine had agreed with the United States on a monthly supply of Patriot interceptor missiles. At the same time, he claimed that there was a shortage of them: according to him, Ukraine needs to receive at least about 5% of the American production of such missiles to get through the winter. Will the US suddenly find hundreds of Patriots now that the smell of money is wafting in the air?
Or is this money for the almost-expired missiles collecting dust in Spain and Greece?
If they’re *almost* expired but still work like new, it makes sense for them to be sent to Ukraine, who will use them now, and let Spain and Greece get new ones to sit on a shelf. (But, Ukraine should get a discount due to their age.)
(Spain and Greece giving or selling Patriots to Ukraine *without* getting a replacement would be a different discussion.)
I wouldn’t be surprised if that orange gangster would prefer sending them to mafia land.
