Europe wants to prepare for US withdrawal from NATO if Trump returns – The Telegraph

This scenario worries more and more European capitals, diplomats say.

European countries should prepare for a possible US withdrawal from NATO if Donald Trump is re-elected as President . A number of European diplomats told The Telegraph about this .

They said European capitals needed to “plan” and review current defense capabilities in light of Trump’s threats to the transatlantic alliance.

Last month, The Telegraph reported that the UK government had no plan if Trump tried to pull the US out of NATO. However, other capitals began to realize that such preparations must be made.

One European diplomat said Mr Trump’s comments were “of course” cause for “concern”. “Nobody knows what he’s going to do next,” he said.

The official said NATO countries should “plan” for a scenario in case Trump weakens US commitment to European allies. “We need preparation,” diplomats say.

However, they also note that NATO has seen a significant increase in countries meeting the target of 2% of GDP spent on defense. Diplomats say NATO members can tell Trump that “he got what he wanted.”

Trump’s threats to NATO allies

As UNIAN wrote, in February, during one of his election rallies, Donald Trump boasted about how harshly he treated his allies during his presidency. According to Trump, the leader of one of the NATO countries once asked him whether the United States would defend his country in the event of an attack by Russia. To this, Trump, in his own words, responded that he would “tell Russia to do whatever they want” with countries that do not spend enough on their defense.

It is noteworthy that during his presidency, Trump threatened to withdraw America from NATO due to the abuse of the American military umbrella by European allies. Trump adviser John Bolton later recalled in his memoirs that President Trump had to be dissuaded several times from his intention to actually withdraw the United States from NATO.

      • Thank you very much. The bullshit Trump would refuse to defend Nato members is euroimperialistic propaganda with the goal to seceede Europe from America and join RuSSia once the war is over. The so called ‘Eurasian Union’. EU+RuSSia+China. About your insult, only dead fish go with the flow. 😎

        • No one really knows what Trump would do, and that is the problem.
I don’t think he would send troops to defend the Baltics, which I bet he cannot even point at on a map.

It is not propaganda, but just his own contradictory statements.
A few weeks ago, he said he would encourage Russia to do whatever it wants in NATO countries that weren’t paying 2%.

Even though I agree on the necessity of paying 2%, this isn’t quite reassuring.

No, not bullshit. That’s a direct quote from trumpkov: “No, I would not protect you.”

He went on to say, “In fact, I would encourage [Russia] to do whatever the Hell they want.”

That was discussed in this group less than a month ago:
