European officials who have been in contact with the Donald Trump administration believe that the US does not have a clear plan to end the war in Ukraine.

Two European officials who spoke recently with the Trump administration said on condition of anonymity that the negotiating team on Ukraine is under pressure to deliver quickly, raising concerns that the United States could take steps that could undermine not only Ukraine but also the European security architecture, the sources told Reuters.

The agency’s interlocutors also noted that they were not reassured by discussions with the White House and did not get the impression that the United States had clear ultimate goals. Two senior Western diplomats who are in contact with the Trump administration told Reuters that they believed Washington lacked a “clear plan” on how to proceed and what to do if Russia continued to delay.

“We sometimes hear conflicting things from different parts of the administration. It also adds to the feeling that there is no real plan here,” one diplomat told Reuters.

The agency also learned that the White House has not yet created a coordinated process for forming policy on Ukraine.

“Contrary to standard practice, the National Security Council held only one principals’ meeting – a meeting attended by all or most of the president’s top national security advisers – on this issue,” the material states.
