From 2014 to 2022, Ukraine celebrated Defenders Day on 14 October, coinciding with the religious holiday of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a day deeply revered by Ukrainian Cossacks.
However, on 1 September 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church adopted the New Julian calendar, shifting the dates of many religious holidays, including the Intercession. As a result, Defenders Day was also moved. Since 2023, the holiday has been observed on 1 October.
On this day, it is customary to honor all persons – past and present – fighting for the independence of Ukraine, including:
- Border guards
- ATO veterans, members of the Territorial Defense Forces, and personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
- Military nurses, medics, cooks, and chaplains supporting frontline operations
- Law enforcement officers
- Defense industry workers
- Volunteers
