Brussels is in constant contact with the Kremlin so that the Russian side does not make decisions that could destabilize the situation in Belarus

The European Union is in dialogue with Moscow to prevent the strengthening of Russian control over Belarus. The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell stated this in an interview with the Spanish news agency El Pais.

“This is also something that should be avoided. Therefore, we are in contact with Russia. The President of the European Council spoke with President Putin, and I with Minister Lavrov, in order to avoid misunderstandings and so that the Russian side does not take decisions that could destabilize the situation (in Belarus – ed.),” Borrell said in response to a question about the likelihood of strengthening the control of Russian President Vladimir Putin over Belarus.

The head of European diplomacy noted that the EU’s relations with Russia are as complicated as those with China. And although, on the one hand, the EU implements a policy of sanctions against the Russian Federation, on the other hand, it recognizes the existence of an energy dependence on it, and for some European countries this dependence is very strong, Borrell stressed.

At the same time, he recognized the fact that Russia is a participant in international politics, and there are many problems – from the Arctic to Syria – that the European Union will have to solve with this country.
