Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service chief Kaupo Rosin said discontent with the Kremlin’s war against Ukraine is growing in Russia, warning that if the country collapses, “it will happen very quickly” on Aug. 29.
“If something changes in Russia, it will happen very quickly, and we will all be surprised. If it happens at all, everything could change literally overnight,” Rosin said in an interview with The Telegraph.
At the same time, he said there were currently no signs of a street revolution in Russia, but that “what matters more now is what the people who have access to money, weapons and information think.”
“What do they think? In those circles, no one is talking about total victory anymore. People are discussing different scenarios and how to properly end this war,” the intelligence chief said.
According to Rosin, overall dissatisfaction with the war against Ukraine is growing across all levels of Russian society, “from ordinary people all the way up to the oligarchs.”
“More and more people don’t want this war. The question is: What impact does this have on his decision-making process?” Rosin said, referring to Vladimir Putin.
He also said Russia’s battlefield losses exceed the number of new recruits and that the Russian economy has suffered a serious blow. One reason is Ukraine’s long-range strikes on oil infrastructure, a major source of revenue for the Russian budget, Rosin said.
“The financial problems are already enormous. The budget deficit has already exceeded what was planned for this year, and according to our estimates, it could amount to half of Russia’s defense budget. Normally, Putin would have little difficulty covering a deficit of this size, but sanctions have largely cut Russia off from the world’s largest financial markets, making it much more difficult and expensive for the Kremlin to borrow money,” the intelligence chief said.
He said the Kremlin would try to ease the problem by raising taxes and asking oligarchs and companies to contribute to the state budget, which would “create an additional source of discontent and internal pressure.”
Prospects for ending the war
According to a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, or KIIS, published Aug. 7, nearly half of Ukrainians expect the war to end no earlier than the second half of 2027.
On Aug. 12, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine and its partners had developed a joint action plan aimed at ending the war.
On Aug. 10, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had data from internal polls in Russia showing that a growing number of Russians want the war to end.
On Aug. 8, the Ukrainian president summed up a 40-day operation aimed at exerting pressure on Russia, saying he was satisfied with the results. He estimated that Ukrainian strikes had caused trillions of rubles in damage to Russian logistics.
When will this collapse happen? That the mafia state will collapse is guaranteed, but when is the big question. Ukraine can help accelerate the shithole’s disintegration by cutting it off from fuel. Without it, nothing works anymore.
