Edward Snowden received Russian citizenship

Russian President Vladimir Putin granted Russian citizenship to American Edward Snowden. The decree on this was published on the official Internet portal of legal information.

Snowden in 2013 gave journalists data on the surveillance programs of the CIA and the National Security Agency (NSA) of the United States for citizens. After that, he fled the country. In the US, he faces 30 years in prison for disclosing classified information.

Snowden left first for Hong Kong and then for Russia. He spent more than a month in the transit zone of the Sheremetyevo airport. Then Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia. In 2020, he  received an indefinite residence permit in the country and  applied for Russian citizenship.

  1. I have mixed feelings about him. On the one hand, snowden exposed the evil of the American NSA spying on its own citizens. On the other hand, he’s also a traitor to the United States, who fled to a criminally run dictatorship that’s now recognized as an enemy in all but formal declaration of war.

If he’d gone fleeing off to Switzerland extradition immunity after exposing the government for spying on its own people, I may have considered him a hero. After all, russia does that, and is a dictatorship.

But then snowden flees and GOES TO RUSSIA. The traditional punishment for what this traitor did, was hanging until dead, wasn’t it?

      • Well maybe we’d all prefer a long, slow death for enemies who deserve a bit of suffering after all the suffering they’ve caused. Snowden is especially an enemy to America, and also to Ukraine, for his embrace of putin’s russia. More so to America because he used to be an active US intelligence agency member, but simply by seeking to become russian in citizenship, he also is an enemy to Ukraine, in addition to any tactical secrets he has that might be relevant.
