Due to lack of orders: the UK has stopped production of Typhoon fighters, – FT

In the UK, production of Eurofighter Typhoon fighters has actually been halted due to a lack of new orders.

This is reported by the Financial Times, Censor.NET reports.

Typhoon fighters have been assembled for decades at BAE Systems’ large factory in Warton, Lancashire, and are now preparing to deliver the last aircraft under a £5 billion contract with Qatar, signed in 2017.

“There is still one plane in the hangar, but it is essentially waiting for a few spare parts and painting. As for the main assembly, everything is complete, none of the workers are anymore involved,” says a union representative.

The publication writes that the British  government has not ordered new aircraft since 2009, and new export contracts with Saudi Arabia and Qatar have not yet been agreed.

The FT notes that if there are no new orders in the near future, there could be a loss of important industrial skills needed to build next-generation fighters as part of the UK’s participation in the Global Combat Aviation Program (GCAP).

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said workers at BAE Systems and across the UK defence industry “will be asking how a government that promises to transform defence spending into ‘British growth, British jobs, British skills, British innovation’ could have allowed this to happen.”

“I have repeatedly told government ministers how great the risk to jobs, skills and national security is if we stop building our own fighter jets,” Graham said.

    • They could and should!
It’s a 40 year old design that has had regular upgrades.
It’s an excellent aircraft. Problem is that it is owned and manufactured by a consortium : UK, Germany, France and (I think) Spain. Parts of the airframe are constructed in those countries and then assembled in the UK with Rolls Royce engines.
All the consortium should do exactly what you suggest. I don’t know why they haven’t. It would also provide lots of new jobs for skilled workers.
For some reason the UK has canceled its plan to build new generation warplanes and thrown its hat in the ring with F35’s.
Not a wise idea at all; especially with such a capricious bastard running the U.S.
