Today, September 6, marks Druzhkivka City Day—a city that was a true home to many, and one that served as a sanctuary and a vital rear-line support base for us during the defense of Bakhmut, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar, and Kostiantynivka. Unfortunately, we cannot celebrate Druzhkivka Day right now. Due to Russian aggression, a city once teeming with life has turned into a wasteland over the past year. Yet, we can show what is happening today in Druzhkivka—a city existing on the thin line between life and death.
This frontline city in the Donetsk region has found itself at the epicenter of hostilities. Russian invaders shell it with dozens of guided aerial bombs almost daily, wiping residential buildings, shops, and administrative structures off the face of the earth, while swarms of enemy drones bring all logistics to a halt.
The concept of a “kill zone” has become a fixture of life near the front line. It is an area where the enemy destroys any movement and anything living. The range and reach of Russian drones have increased significantly, extending to every corner of the city.
Druzhkivka has long been without water, gas, or central heating. Nevertheless, around 2,600 residents remain there. People can occasionally be seen on the streets, walking with water containers or searching for food, all while risking becoming the next victims of Russian FPV drones.
Due to the difficulties involved in evacuating the dead, bodies are being buried right on the streets. Graves can be found between apartment blocks in neighborhoods closer to the front line. At times, one is confronted with harrowing scenes where the deceased could not be buried at all.Druzhkivka is of critical importance, as it is an integral part of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration and serves as the main gateway to Kramatorsk. Defense forces are doing everything possible to counter the enemy’s advance toward the city, as Druzhkivka could become the next major battlefield in the struggle for the Donetsk region, following Kostiantynivka.
