Ukrainian drones broke through air defenses over Moscow and struck the Moscow Oil Refinery ( REF ) in Kapotno. The strike on the refinery caused a fire.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the strikes on the refinery and said that 33 drones were allegedly shot down over the Russian capital. “Air defense forces continue to repel the massive attack. Several drones managed to reach the Moscow Refinery. Measures are being taken to eliminate the consequences,” Sobyanin said.

As detailed by monitoring Telegram channels, on the morning of June 18, residents of Moscow and the Moscow region reported a mass drone flight. Despite statements by the Russian authorities about the alleged successful shooting down of the drones, several of them still reached their targets.

Videos that have appeared online show numerous areas of fire at the Kapotny refinery. Huge columns of black smoke rose above the city, visible from all sides of Moscow.

It is noted that the refinery in Kapotno is located just 15 km from the Kremlin and is critically important for providing Muscovites with fuel. In particular, the plant provides about 40% of the Moscow region’s needs for gasoline and 50% for diesel fuel, and also supplies aviation fuel for military needs.

There was also a lot of noise in the Rostov region that night. There was an attack on an oil depot in Gukovo. Monitors reported that the attack damaged a diesel locomotive and caused two fires.

Strikes on Moscow

On June 16, Moscow authorities announced the shooting down of 25 UAVs. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin acknowledged  the oil refinery had been hit . On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed the attack on the Moscow oil refinery, saying it was a “fair response to Russian strikes.”

Later, Reuters, citing two sources, reported that an oil refinery  in Moscow  had stopped its operations after strikes by the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
