On the morning of July 9, powerful explosions were heard in the Russian city of Tver. The local oil depot “Tvernefteproduct”, located in the southern part of the city, was attacked by Ukrainian drones. In the Stavropol Territory, the target of the attack was the oil depot “Lukoil-Yugnaftoprodukt”.
A large-scale fire broke out after the strikes on the enterprises, according to the monitoring Telegram channel Exilenova+.
Details of the event in Tver
According to local residents, at around 4 a.m., the distinctive sound of drone engines was heard in the sky above the city. Shortly after, air defense systems were activated, and explosions were heard in the area of the “Elevator” industrial zone, where fuel tanks are concentrated.
The strike caused a fire at the oil depot. Eyewitnesses posted footage on social media showing open flames and a thick column of black smoke above the facility.
According to analysis by the OSINT community World Militares, Ukrainian forces attacked an oil storage facility in the city of Tver. Photos posted by local residents show a fire in one of the tanks.
ASTRA’s OSINT analysis also confirms that the Tver oil depot has been attacked and is on fire. The enterprise is located in Tver, Elevator village, Bochkina street, 29. This is the main oil depot of LLC “Sales Association “Tvernaftoprodukt”.
Attack in Stavropol Territory
On the night of July 9, residents of the Stavropol Territory also reported explosions. There, the target of the attack was an oil depot in Mikhailovsk, which specializes in the storage, transshipment, and sale of petroleum products through other oil depots and a network of gas stations in southern and central Russia.
The governor of Stavropol Krai confirmed the attack on the region and said a fire had broken out on the “territory of an industrial facility.” Emergency services are on the scene.
The facility in Mikhailovsk serves as a distribution hub. Fuel is delivered here in large bulk (mainly by rail from the company’s oil refineries, the nearest of which is the Volgograd Refinery), and from there it is delivered by fuel trucks through a network of gas stations and to private small-wholesale customers (for example, agricultural enterprises).
The base specializes in the reception and storage of light petroleum products (various brands of gasoline and diesel fuel).
What is known about the facility in Tver?
The facility of LLC “Sales Association “Tvernefteproduct” is a large base oil depot and is a subsidiary of PJSC “Surgutneftegaz”. The facility plays a strategic role in the logistics chain of the region. It is a key hub for the accumulation, storage and distribution of finished motor fuel in the Tver region.
Directly next to the Tvernefteproduct oil depot is the state fuel storage facility Krasna Zorya of Rosrezerv. This significantly increases the status of the facility, since Rosrezerv bases are directly intended for strategic fuel storage in case of prolonged crises or large military needs.
Strikes on facilities such as the Tver oil depot have not so much an immediate tactical effect as a cumulative strategic effect on the Russian army and the defense-industrial complex.
Tver Oblast is located relatively close to Moscow and is an important transport corridor in the North-West of the Russian Federation. The destruction of the distribution hub complicates the prompt refueling of military equipment transported by rail and road through the region, as well as the supply of local military units.
As a reminder, the day before, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that large-scale drone strikes on Moscow and St. Petersburg, combined with the worsening economic situation in Russia, could force the Kremlin leadership to reconsider its attitude towards the war. He expressed his belief that the psychological effect of attacks on Russian territory would gradually weaken the Russian dictator’s willingness to continue hostilities.
As OBOZ.UA reported, on the night of July 7, the Defense Forces struck the JSC “Silicon EL Group” enterprise in Bryansk and a chemical plant in the same city. The extent of the damage and the results of the attack are currently being clarified .
