‘Don’t mention the war!’

These famous lines from the British comedy series Fawlty Towers currently seem to apply to British national media outlets.

In the last weeks there have been major manoeuvres from both sides. After their victory in the north, Ukraine moved forces south to threaten Mariupol, the Russians countered, destroyed a dam and slowed Ukraine down for long enough to get reinforcements in place. Ukraine then redirected its assault back to Donbas and surrounded Lyman where they might seal off a brigade of Russian troops.

The weather has changed and will inevitably slow down all military movement but there are still Russian forces cut off on the west bank of Dnipro River that are running out of food and clean water.

It’s not going well for Russia, so Putin distracts, he bangs his drum and talks about nuclear weapons in the morning and peace in the evening. This sparkly thing attracts the press, so they chase it like fish after a lure. The real story is continuing Ukrainian success. This is where the focus must lie, so Ukraine knows we are still with them, we will supply them and we still admire them for their courage.

Come on! Let’s talk about the Russia/Ukraine war, it is the most important thing happening in the world. It affects markets, banks, economies, immigration, food prices, energy bills and is taking thousands of lives. Oh yes, and it’s not funny.

Let’s talk about the war,

Slava Ukraini!

  1. Not to mention, one side is following the rules but the other side is not. That alone should get Ukraine a lot of exposure from the media who are supposed to support a “Rules-based system”.
