In recent months, during talks to end the war, Ukrainian officials have reportedly proposed
naming the unoccupied part of Donbas “Donnyland” after U.S. President Donald Trump. The idea emerged as a way to influence Washington’s position and sway Trump to take a harder line on russia.
The New York Times reports this, citing four sources familiar with the negotiations, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the closed nature of the discussions.
As the publication notes, the idea of ”Donnyland” was first voiced as a half-joke by one of the Ukrainian negotiators. At the same time, it had a specific goal: to try to interest Trump and push his administration to more actively counter the territorial claims of the aggressor country, russia.
The publication recalls that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has declared his intention to continue fighting until his troops reach the administrative borders of Donbas, a region in eastern Ukraine where the war has been ongoing since 2014.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the very name “Donnieland”, which is associated with “Disneyland”, looks in contrast to the destroyed and almost empty industrial region.
However, as the publication notes, such a proposal reflects a global reality in which governments appeal to Trump’s vanity to gain US support.
For Ukraine, this tactic has not yet yielded results. Although this term continues to be used in negotiations, there is no evidence that it has been enshrined in official documents.
The possibility that Trump’s so-called “peace council” could play a role in governing this territory was also discussed, although neither Ukraine nor Russia has joined it.
The idea of ”Donnyland” was part of a broader attempt by Kyiv to sway Trump to put more pressure on Moscow, especially after Trump’s high-profile meeting with Putin in Alaska, when the US presidential administration signaled it might support a peace deal that would force Ukraine to withdraw from the entire Donetsk region.
According to estimates by Ukrainian officials, about 190,000 people currently live in the controlled territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, although some sources believe that the real number may be half that.
According to sources, the initiative aimed to create a territory in Donbas that would not be under the full control of either side, which Trump could present as his own diplomatic “achievement.”
According to the publication’s sources, one of the Ukrainian negotiators allegedly even created a green and gold flag and anthem for “Donnieland” using ChatGPT. However, it is unknown whether these materials were even seen by American representatives.
Also, another proposal regarding the future of Donbas was being considered in parallel—the “Monaco model,” which envisioned the creation of a semi-autonomous mini-state with the status of an offshore economic zone. Unlike “Donnyland,” the term “Monaco model” appeared in the draft documents.
Despite all these ideas, Russia has not agreed to options that would satisfy Ukraine. As a result, the future of this territory remains one of the main unresolved issues in the negotiations.
As OBOZ.UA reported, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that a complete withdrawal from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions would be a strategic loss for Ukraine. If such a scenario were to be implemented, our fortifications and defense line would remain there.
