According to sources, Musk’s department is looking for employees who are disloyal to Trump.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk , is monitoring federal civil servants with the help of artificial intelligence, Reuters reports .

Musk’s team is reportedly monitoring the communications of at least one federal agency to detect hostility toward US President Donald Trump.

According to journalists, DOGE makes unconventional use of AI and other technologies.

“The surveillance will be an example of the unusual use of technology to detect signs of perceived disloyalty among a workforce already reeling from mass layoffs and drastic cost-cutting,” the report says.

According to the source, the DOGE team, among other things, uses the Signal app for communication, which potentially violates federal record-keeping regulations because messages can disappear after a certain period of time.

The department also reportedly has “extensive” use of Musk’s Grok AI chatbot as part of its work to shrink the federal government. The use of AI and Signal heightens concerns among cybersecurity experts that Musk or the Trump administration could use information gathered through AI to advance their own interests or pursue political goals.

Journalists write that one of the structures whose employees the DOGE team used technology to monitor is the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has come under the close attention of the Trump administration.

The EPA reported that DOGE uses AI to monitor communication apps and software such as Microsoft Teams.

“We were told they were looking for anti-Trump or anti-Moscow language,” one of the sources told reporters.

Two other people told the publication that DOGE will be looking for people whose work is not aligned with the Trump administration’s mission. In this regard, one of the managers urged government officials to be careful about what they write about or do.

Trump later announced that Musk’s DOGE department would be shut down. He said that sooner or later the billionaire would want to return to his company.
