Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the United States her country’s most important and closest ally, amid tensions over Greenland .

In an interview with TV 2 following US President-elect Donald Trump’s high-profile press conference, Frederiksen said she did not believe the US would use military or economic force to secure control of Greenland:

“I don’t have the imagination to imagine that we will get to this point.”

The prime minister welcomed the American interest in the situation in the North Atlantic. “As a very close ally of the United States, I believe there is reason to welcome the growing American interest. But this must be done with respect for the Greenlandic people. At the same time, it must be done in a way that allows Denmark and the United States to continue to cooperate in NATO,” she added.

Frederiksen had previously told reporters that Greenland was not for sale, but Denmark welcomed American investment there. “We are clearly interested in the United States playing a larger role in this region, and not, for example, Russia,” Bloomberg quotes her as saying .
