Death toll from Russian strike on Poltava rises to 51, investigation launched

The death toll from the Russian attack on Poltava has risen to 51, the Prosecutor General’s Office said . More than 200 people were injured.

“Under the procedural leadership of the Poltava Specialized Defense Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation has been launched into the fact of an encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine (Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine),” the Prosecutor General’s Office reported.

They added that according to the investigation, on September 3, Russian occupiers attacked Poltava with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles. The enemy hit an educational institution and a hospital.

“One of the buildings of the Institute of Communications, a hospital and adjacent houses were partially destroyed. Rescuers, an investigative task force and other services are currently working on the scene, and the rubble is being cleared. The number of victims is being clarified. Prosecutors, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, are documenting the consequences of yet another crime by the aggressor state. Urgent investigative actions are ongoing,” the Prosecutor General’s Office reported.

Attack on Poltava: what is known

On Tuesday afternoon, September 3, Russian occupiers struck an educational institution and a hospital in Poltava with two ballistic missiles . President Volodymyr Zelensky initially reported that 41 people were killed and 180 were injured as a result of the strike.

The Defense Ministry later commented on the Russian attack, noting that the time interval between the alarm and the arrival of the deadly ballistic missiles was so short that it caught people at the moment of evacuation to a bomb shelter.

Due to the Russian attack in the Poltava region, a three-day mourning period has been declared from tomorrow in memory of the victims.
