A NATO general has said that Ukraine’s drone unit, which comprises just 2% of the country’s armed forces, inflicts up to half of Russia’s losses on the battlefield.

In an interview with German news outlet Welt published Tuesday, Major General Maik Keller commented on the changing nature of warfare, which now relies more on innovation and new technologies than traditional equipment.

“Ukraine faces a numerically superior enemy and yet has held its ground for years,” Keller said, adding: “This is due to Western support, but also to its own will and its ability to adapt extremely quickly.”

As evidence, Keller said that Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Force, the drone unit which comprises only 2% of the country’s armed forces, accounts for an estimated 30-50% of Russian losses.

‘No signs of waning support’

As deputy commander of NATO’s Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) unit, Keller helps lead the delivery of military equipment, training and related support from NATO and partner nations to Ukraine.

Commenting on so-called ‘war fatigue’ among Ukraine’s allies, the general said he sees “no signs of a waning of support” for Kyiv in Europe, even as the conflict approaches its fourth year and “an end to the war is not currently foreseeable.”

Keller cited the example of Germany, which houses the NSATU headquarters and which has transformed from a hesitant early supporter to one of Ukraine’s most important backers, providing what Keller called “invaluable” Patriot air-defense systems.

No single ‘wonder weapon’

But Keller emphasized that no single “wonder weapon” would decide the war and encouraged NATO members to continue the constant flow of materials for Ukraine.

“That would also send a clear signal to Moscow that a war of aggression doesn’t pay off in the long run,” the general added.

Keller also said European companies should invest in Ukraine’s security and create joint ventures, especially in areas in which Kyiv is now a leading force like drone technology.

“This strengthens Ukraine’s resilience—and simultaneously serves our own defense capabilities,” Keller said.
