Czech initiative to purchase shells for Kyiv faces obstacles – Defense News

Not all officials share an optimistic view of the bold proposal moving forward.

Three months after the start of the massive purchase of ammunition for Ukraine, Czech officials are sharing different assessments of how this is happening. Defense News writes about this .

“The Czech-led initiative to finance and urgently purchase artillery ammunition for Ukraine is making steady progress – the first 180,000 shells have been ordered and should arrive before June,” said Frantisek Schulc, First Deputy Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic.

According to him, Prague is actively cooperating with partner countries to obtain additional financial resources and ensure “constant supplies of ammunition” to Ukraine in the coming months.

“However, not all officials appear to share the same optimistic view of the status of the bold proposal, which would involve the purchase of badly needed 122mm and 155mm artillery shells on the world market. … Czech President Petr Pavel said the initiative was not progressing as quickly as expected, in part because the Russian government knew the details of the operation,” the newspaper writes.

According to the head of the Czech state, “the more people know about the initiative, the greater the competition.”

“On the one hand, this had to be made public in order to gain support from other countries, but on the other hand, we also revealed our cards,” Pavel said.

The publication notes that it was difficult for Kyiv’s allies to cross the fine line between transparency and invisibility. For throughout the war in Ukraine, some have tried to balance concerns about revealing too much of their plans to Moscow with being as responsible as possible.

“There are also growing concerns about the possibility that Russia will intercept operational details of purchases related to Ukraine, following the leak of a German Air Force teleconference about the possible dispatch of Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv,” the material says.

Shultz added that meeting the security and specific requirements of the Ukrainian Armed Forces also “takes a very long time,” and “it is important to convey the urgency of the situation in Ukraine and the critical need for support.”

  1. Obstacles as in: The Germans, as always informed Moscow with their ‘open sources’ systems.
And Russia bought the shells……….this kind of small obstacles they mean, right?

    • Moscow didn’t need to rely on any German traitor, this initiative had been made public by the Czech government themselves and then reported in virtually all European media channels. This had been the total opposite of a secret project right from the start. 🙄

  2. Regarding Europe’s methodologies, behavior, and strategies, have I ever mentioned the Three Stooges?

“On the one hand, this had to be made public in order to gain support from other countries…”

So, in order to gather support, this initiative had to be announced to everyone on this planet? Do they think that everyone who reads this is stupid? Because, are there no other ways to inform those who would make the necessary decisions, like a phone call through secure lines, or a visit, or something like that?
    The West = Keystone Kops.

  3. With honest respect for the Czech initiative – at least one Nato country thinking “outside the box”! – but these concerns should had been obvious to every intelligent person right away. Including that going public with the fundraiser probably way a bad idea. To alert the effing Russians, giving them a chance for interference, was a rather counterproductive idea. This whole project should have been rather financed by the EU’s defence fund, under highest security. ☹
