“Crops are drying up” – grain collapse in southern Russia, farmers prepare for losses

July 18, 2025

Russia’s leading grain-growing regions are expecting the smallest harvest in five years due to severe drought.

A grain catastrophe is brewing in Russia  due to a severe drought that has engulfed the south of the country. Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar and Stavropol Krais, which are key grain regions of the Russian Federation, will harvest the lowest grain harvest in the last five years this year,  The Moscow Times writes , citing expert forecasts.

Farmers are calling the current drought the worst in many years.

Southern Russia in state of emergency

In Krasnodar Krai, the state of emergency is now in effect in 17 districts, including the northern ones, where winter wheat crops are concentrated. According to the authorities, only 45% of winter crops are in good condition.

“The crops are drying up ,” complains local governor Veniamin Kondratyev.

A similar situation is in the Rostov region, where a state of emergency has been declared in 19 districts. The region provides up to 10% of the country’s total grain harvest.

Farmers sound the alarm

According to experts, crop yields in arid regions may be cut in half, and in some cases, three or four times. Farmers are sounding the alarm, fearing that the money spent on raw material production will not pay off.

Rostov Oblast, the leader in grain harvesting, risks getting the minimum harvest in 10 years. In 2024, due to weather anomalies, only 11.4 million tons were collected here instead of the planned 16 million. This year, a further 20% decrease is possible.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture continues to pretend that the situation is under control, and even predicts that this year the country will harvest 5 million tons of grain more (135 million tons) than last year. However, the actual harvest as of July 2 is only 3.8 million tons – 4.3 times less than last year’s figures.

The Institute for Agricultural Market Studies, in turn, currently forecasts a harvest of 130 million tons of grain, but they warn that these figures will likely be reduced.

  1. “Experts also point to the risks of deterioration in the quality of food wheat and barley.”

This won’t be the first time. There are many stories in mafia land about them using cattle feed to make bread for the sheep.
