Consequences of Putin’s mobilization: Russian factories hired almost 50 thousand foreign workers

Large and small industrial enterprises in Russia last year hired 47,000 workers from China, India, Turkey, Serbia and other countries with which the visa regime applies. Thus, the number of foreigners involved was 16% higher than the Russian government’s initial quota of 40,500 people.

This is evidenced by data from the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation, The Moscow Times reports .

The department explained that the size of the quota is determined based on market needs and applications from regions. At the same time, to employ a foreigner under the quota, enterprises must ask for permission. Attracting workers from abroad is “objectively necessary” if the necessary personnel cannot be found in Russia , the Russian Labor Ministry emphasized.

Foreign specialists such as welders, concrete workers, finishing specialists, as well as employees for the food and agricultural industries are in high demand among Russian employers.

According to interlocutors in the recruitment market, employers most often seek help in attracting specialists from China, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and the Philippines, since many of them are Buddhists and Hindus, that is, representatives of those religions that value internal discipline and respect for rules . Such employees are responsible, calm and not prone to conflicts.

It was previously reported that in 2024, the labor shortage in Russia reached a record 2.6 million people, which is 17% more than a year earlier.

It has previously become known that Russian manufacturing enterprises continue to face an acute labor shortage – the industry lacks about 1.9 million employees.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted that Russia will experience a shortage of personnel for years and that it will not be possible to solve it through migration.

It was also reported that the Taliban movement, which rules Afghanistan, agreed to increase the flow of Afghan labor migrants to Russia by 10 times .

In early March, it was reported that Russian regions had begun to recruit migrant workers from Myanmar , which is considered one of the poorest countries in the world.

In May, it became known that the DPRK had sent about 15,000 workers to Russia , where there is a labor shortage due to a falling birth rate and sending people to the war against Ukraine.
