Fuel supplies will last for several days, and schools are already asking children to come to class in warm sweaters.

The conflict over Iran has triggered a new gas crisis in the unrecognized Transnistria region of Moldova, threatening the region with heat and electricity shortages due to disruptions in the supply of “blue fuel” , Reuters reports .

The so-called Transnistrian Moldavian Republic (PMR) announced critical disruptions in gas supplies amid events in the Middle East related to the conflict around Iran.

According to the “Ministry of Economic Development,” the situation in the region has led to “critical disruptions” in gas supplies, leading to a sharp reduction in available fuel volumes. The “agency” noted that due to the shortage, restrictions have been imposed on the use of gas for commercial needs and heating.

Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu noted that the region has only a few days’ worth of gas reserves left. According to him, the Transnistrian “authorities” face a choice: receive gas every day, even if it is more expensive, or leave schools, kindergartens, and residential buildings without heating.

The “ministry” assures that hospitals and kindergartens will continue to provide heating as usual. At the same time, local online forums have already advised parents to send their children to school in warmer clothes – cardigans, sweaters and vests.

It is also reported that some industries and Tiraspol are already experiencing problems due to fuel shortages.

Transnistria previously received Russian gas almost free of charge through a pipeline that runs through Ukraine. However, last year, Kyiv stopped the gas transit amid a full-scale war with Russia.

As a result, about 350,000 residents of the region and most industrial enterprises were deprived of heat and electricity supplies for more than a month last year. Since then, the region has started purchasing more expensive gas from European suppliers, but the conflict in Iran has reduced the volume of these supplies.
