The city is Kyiv, the Podyl region. The song is associated with the Ukrainian tradition of Kolyadka, were people go from house to house singing at Christmas. They are usually rewarded with drinks and candies.

I read that Ukrainians are beginning to put more emphasis on Dec 25 as a way to create more differential from the foul scum next door.

I’m still in Holland, but relatives back in our village say life is going on. There are still power cuts on a daily basis, although the situation is improving.

Traditionally my family has celebrated Dec 25th as Jesus’ birthday, and keep lights up till Jan 7th remembering the magi whom brought Jesus gifts.
