China hits trade with Russia: AliExpress stops selling computer components

03/03/2025

Chinese marketplace AliExpress has banned Russians from ordering a number of computer components, including DDR4 and DDR5 RAM and M.2 solid-state drives (SSDs). A possible reason for this may be increased
sanctions control by the United States, as Washington continues to tighten restrictions on the supply of high-tech equipment to Russia.

“The thing is that Chinese SSDs and RAM modules (random access memory. – Ed.) often contain either Taiwanese components or software in which part of the code is written by American companies. And is protected by American patents,” the Russian media reported.

It is emphasized that this version is considered the most likely, because:

  • It is impossible to find modern AMD and NVIDIA video cards for sale on AliExpress, and modern Intel and AMD computer processors appear as lots in third-party categories – “with an incomplete description and meaningless annotations in the style of “R5 5600 power supply unit.”
  • Outdated SSD (SATA-III) and RAM (DDR3 and older) formats are freely sold to Russian buyers.

“They sell computer processors to buyers. In this way, the Chinese bypass AliExpress’s own restrictions on the sale of components in the Russian Federation,” the authors of the material said.

At the same time, it is noted that there are other versions of what happened. In particular, the ban may be related to:

  • Possible difficulties in mutual settlements between the Chinese Alibaba and its Russian joint venture LLC “Alibaba.com (RU)”, created in cooperation with the Russian holdings VK and USM (formerly Mail.ru).
  • Possible innovations in Russian legislation for foreign sellers.
  • A technical error, a logistics problem, or preparation for listing RAM/SSD lots for the upcoming AliExpress sale in mid-March.

As OBOZ.UA reported, Russians were previously lied to about the return of Visa and Mastercard. These payment systems do not plan to return to Russia, and talk about this was only part of information manipulation.
