Candidate for the post of Chancellor of Germany Merz announced a visit to Ukraine: what is known

12/5/2024

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and candidate for German chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that he is going to visit Ukraine. The visit may take place in the coming days.

The politician announced his trip on Wednesday, December 4, in his speech on security policy in Berlin. His words were quoted by NTV.

Mertz noted that he would “inform European partners” about the trip and its results. He already visited Ukraine in May 2022 – shortly after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.

Also, in his speech, the chancellor candidate called for the creation of a contact group from Germany, France, Poland and Great Britain to develop a common European strategy to support Ukraine “with the aim of ending the war”. Merz said he’s pushing it now “because none of us really know what’s going to happen after January 20, 2025.” As you know, the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump is to take place on this day.

The CDU leader called on Europe to provide great support to Ukraine “by all necessary diplomatic, financial, humanitarian and even military means” so that the country could exercise its right to self-defense and restore its territorial integrity.

“Ukraine must win the war, and Russia must lose the war,” Merz said.

In addition, he advocated strengthening the military power of Germany and other European states.

“We must be able to defend ourselves so that we don’t have to defend ourselves. Strength deters aggression, weakness provokes aggression,” the candidate said, adding that Germany and Europe “must be strong, with strong armed forces, strong civil defense and robust infrastructure “.

As OBOZ.UA reported, earlier Friedrich Mertz said that he is ready to support the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine . However, before that, it is worth issuing a warning to Putin with the demand to stop the attacks on the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine.

  1. Merz says all the right things. Let’s hope he’ll do as he says, which would make him even better than Scholz. Ukraine could use a strong Western leader … and so could the West.

    • Merz taking power can’t come soon enough.
There was a British Army press conference yesterday. From the DT:

“General Sir James Everard, a former deputy supreme allied commander of Nato, who was also speaking at the event, warned: “While we are not a nation at war, we should act as though we are.”
Discussing the war in Ukraine, Gen Sir James added: “Russia is generating more manpower than it is losing and Ukraine is losing more manpower than it is generating.”

  2. “Ukraine must win the war, and Russia must lose the war,” Merz said.”

The first senior politician since Boris to utter those words. What a pity we have to wait for so long for him to take over. God willing, he will command a good majority.
