Journalists talked about his raid into occupied Crimea.

The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov , was part of the elite unit “Detachment 2245”, which trained the American Central Intelligence Agency.

According to an article in The New York Times , Budanov was one of the officers in a unit that seized Russian drones and communications equipment so that CIA technicians could repurpose them and break encryption systems.

“General Budanov was a rising star in Unit 2245. He was known for daring operations behind enemy lines and had deep ties to the CIA. The agency trained him and also took the extraordinary step of sending him to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland for rehabilitation after how he was wounded in the right hand during the fighting in Donbass,” journalists write.

During one of the operations, Budanov, dressed in Russian uniform, landed in the occupied Crimea, transporting soldiers across a narrow bay on inflatable boats. On the peninsula, Ukrainian fighters were met by an elite Russian special forces unit. During the battle, the occupiers suffered losses – among those killed was the son of a Russian general. The Ukrainian group then retreated to the coastline and sailed for several hours to Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The partnership was so successful that the CIA wanted to repeat them with other European intelligence agencies focused on countering Russia, the newspaper writes.

CIA assistance to Ukraine: what is known

Let us recall that The New York Times previously published an article reporting on the long-term cooperation between the United States and Ukraine in the field of intelligence.

According to them, 12 secret facilities were built along the Russian border. Also, the US intelligence agency partially equips an underground military base, which is called the “secret nerve center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

      • Well, Bert, many newspapers will do almost everything for clicks and subscriptions nowadays. But as for the question, what the sources were thinking, the answer’s less clear. Many of them seem to want to heap praise on Budanov. But for officers in intelligence services, that’s not a good look. Those guys are talking too much.
        😠

  1. The Duranty Times acts as though Ukraine working with the US’ CIA to fight fascism and tyranny is something scandalous and controversial. They are just feeding their masters in the Kremlin.

  2. Btw, I’m glad that at least German intelligence service BND wasn’t mentioned as a source. The reason may be, though, that German spooks don’t know any interesting stories anyway. 😕

  3. This information is of the same magnitude as that released by Snowden/Assange. Do you seriously think that a US media outlet would broadcast this information without intention?

Anyway, in my opinion, if this is all true, it’s an open secret for the secret services of any major nation. Especially since the SBU are still discovering former and current officials of Ukraine’s intelligence services allegedly working for the FSB (Feb. 6 2024).

Furthermore, I don’t see how this information could not be noted today. The support of the West and its agencies is total and no one in the West hesitates to openly support Ukraine. I don’t see how this is boring.

On the other hand, I think that Budanov himself is participating in a strategy of disinformation, blinding the enemy and “de-orbiting” the conflict. The goal could be actually to keep the Kremlin on its toes about what actions can be taken alongside the conflict itself, and to let it focus on the next move that might come. That’s my feeling.

  4. Hard to know why they would publish this when supposedly the Democratic Party is 100% supportive of Ukraine. The New York Times is a publication that is normally the mouthpiece/propaganda outlet for progressives. Is this just a knee jerk reaction of their reporters/editors reverting to their traditional anti CIA/military worldview?
