LONDON – British Foreign Secretary David Cameron exchanged messages and made a video call with someone posing as former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. It was later determined to be a fake, the State Department said. Cameron would regret his mistake.

Although the video call clearly appeared to be with Poroshenko, Cameron became suspicious after the conversation, the department said. After investigation, it turned out that the messages and the video call were a prank. The ministry provided no details about what was discussed, other than to say the caller asked Cameron for contact information for others.
The ministry said Cameron is making the deception public in case the video is manipulated and used, “and to ensure that others are aware of this risk.”
Not the first time
Cameron is not the first British foreign minister to have been fooled. In 2018, then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson discussed international relations and poetry with someone posing as the Prime Minister of Armenia.

As Foreign Secretary, he became the first senior western politician to permit Ukraine to use British missiles inside russia.
