Britain is close to ceding Atlantic dominance to Russia for the first time since the end of World War II , the country’s naval commander, General Gwyn Jenkins, warned, according to The Times .

“The advantage we’ve enjoyed in the Atlantic since the end of the Cold War, World War II, is under threat. We’re holding on, but not for long,” Jenkins said.

He said Russia had invested “billions” in its naval capabilities, particularly its Northern Fleet, “despite the millions of lives and cost of its blatant, illegal invasion of Ukraine.”

“We must step up our efforts, otherwise we will lose this advantage. We cannot allow this to happen,” he stressed.

Russia strengthens its presence in the Atlantic

Russia’s incursions into British waters have increased by 30% in the past two years, including the “visible presence” of surveillance ships such as the Yantar.

At the same time, Jenkins stated that “Yantar” is “only the visible part, but it is not that which worries me most.”

“What worries me most is what’s happening beneath the waves,” he stresses, noting that the UK is waging war in the “underwater battlespace” using new technologies such as autonomous underwater gliders capable of detecting enemy submarines and Atlantic Bastion, a series of autonomous sensors that will be “our eyes and ears.”
