Bringing Russian President Vladimir Putin to justice in the genocide case will be difficult, as no current leader of the state has ever been prosecuted on such a charge.

This was stated by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin in an interview with CBS News .

According to him, a full-scale invasion is the root cause of Russian war crimes in Ukraine, which fall under the definition of genocide. The prosecutor general is convinced that Putin authorized or knew about everything that the military under his command did, but it will not be easy to prove this command system to the highest level.

“The crime of aggression is the mother of all these war crimes, genocide, because without aggression there will be no other war crimes. And therefore, for the crime of aggression, Russia’s top political and military leadership must be held accountable and punished,” Kostin stressed.

He also noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office is already investigating the genocide case. At the moment, prosecutors have recorded 34,000 war crimes in Ukraine.

“When we talk about prioritization, of course, those cases that we see today, war crimes committed in the Kharkiv region, including in Izyum, of course, such cases are our priority. Nevertheless, we have many cases that are still are being investigated, which began in such cities as Bucha, Irpen. And all the shelling and destruction of all civilian objects in Ukraine are also recorded, and then investigated. We are now seeing a monstrous number of potential war crimes committed by the Russian aggressor,” Kostin said.

He also noted that the commission of war crimes is systemic among the Russian army. “And it seems to me that when the Russian army comes, they turn this place into a new Bucha,” the prosecutor general said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on September 16, the head of the National Police, Igor Klymenko, said that 10 dungeons were found in the de-occupied territories of the Kharkiv region . Also, approximately 445 graves of civilians were found near the city of Izyum, which was under occupation.

According to Oleg Kotenko, Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, five cemeteries were discovered in the Izyumsky district , where civilians and soldiers who died as a result of Russian aggression are buried.

According to Oleg Sinegubov, the head of the Kharkiv OVA, among the bodies that were exhumed at the mass grave site in Izyum, 99% had signs of violent death .

Now the exhumation of the bodies of people killed by the occupiers continues . The work will continue for almost two more weeks. The bodies of the dead are being taken to Kharkov for examination.

According to Oleg Sinegubov, experts from the National Police in the Kharkiv region exhumed 59 bodies in Izyum . Among them are the bodies of 42 civilians and 17 military personnel.
