The BRICS countries never sided with Russia in its aggression against Ukraine.
The final declaration of the BRICS summit in Kazan has demonstrated Russia’s failure to win over the group’s members to its side on the war in Ukraine, according to a statement from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
What is the final declaration of the BRICS summit about?
The text of the declaration, which was published by the Russian Foreign Ministry , contains criticism of Western sanctions and calls for the prevention of armed conflicts “including by eliminating their root causes.” At the same time, the declaration speaks of the need for “full compliance with the norms of international humanitarian law in conflict situations.”
Several points of the declaration are devoted to a wide range of criticism of Israel regarding its military operations in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, but without mentioning the immediate reasons for these operations.
In a separate point, the summit participants declared the need for “unconditional respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria” and condemned the “illegal foreign military presence” in that country, probably hinting at the United States.
Point 36 of the final declaration is dedicated to Ukraine. It is on this that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry focuses its attention. Unlike Syria, BRICS does not propose respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country, nor does it condemn the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine. However, the summit participants did not express direct support for Russian aggression either.
“We recall the national positions on the situation in and around Ukraine, outlined in the relevant forums, including the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly.
We emphasize that all states must act in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter in their entirety and interrelatedness.
We note with satisfaction the relevant offers of mediation and good offices, aimed at ensuring a peaceful settlement of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy,” paragraph 36 of the final declaration states.
