US President Donald Trump may announce new sanctions against Russia on July 14. Bloomberg TV columnist Greg Sullivan reported this , noting the high uncertainty regarding the White House’s position.
The Times reports that he is seriously considering imposing tough secondary sanctions on countries that trade oil with Russia, including China, India and Turkey. He is backing a bill that would impose a 500% tariff on imports from Russia – effectively a global oil embargo.
According to the publication, the reason for this approach was Trump’s dissatisfaction with Putin’s refusal to negotiate and continued strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine. He previously called the bill “too tough,” but now said he was “studying it carefully.”
The Times writes that the main issue is the risk of economic consequences. The White House wants to keep the lifting of sanctions under the president’s authority, while Congress offers limited control. Even partial implementation of these measures, analysts say, could hit the Russian economy hard.
