BREAKING NEWS: White House wants to stop funding investigation into Russian war crimes in Ukraine, media reports

The US presidential administration has recommended ending funding for nearly two dozen programs that investigate war crimes around the world, including in Myanmar, Syria, and Russia’s atrocities in the war against Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters with reference to sources,  Censor.NET reports .

It is noted that the White House Office of Management and Budget sent a letter to the US State Department on Wednesday with proposals to stop funding a number of programs.

The Office of Management and Budget’s recommendation, which was not previously reported, is not a final decision to terminate the programs because it gives the State Department the opportunity to appeal.

Three sources told the agency that several of the programs that are planned to be terminated implement projects to hold accountable for war crimes in Ukraine.

This includes the Global Rights Compliance project, which helps collect evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity across Ukraine, such as sexual violence and torture.

Another program is the Legal Action Network, a legal aid group that supports local efforts to hold Russian war crimes suspects in Ukraine accountable, sources told Reuters.

Expectations that Rubio will advocate for the continuation of many programs are low, according to two U.S. officials.

However, according to one source familiar with the matter, Rubio may advocate for preserving important programs, such as assistance in potential prosecutions for Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
