The US President supported this measure, and a vote in the Senate is coming soon.

A bipartisan group of senators announced an agreement on a long-awaited bill that would allow US President Donald Trump to impose more restrictions against major buyers of Russian energy, as well as against Iran.

Trump has made it clear that he supports the measure, which was championed by the late Senator Lindsey Graham, and a procedural vote on it is scheduled for Tuesday evening, Bloomberg writes .

The bill extends sanctions against Iran and singles out Russian gas and oil exports, giving the president the authority to impose tariffs on the five largest buyers of Russian oil and natural gas, as well as on the five countries that most help Russia evade energy sanctions, according to the text released Tuesday.

Although this law has long been sought by Graham and other ardent supporters of Ukraine, it could jeopardize the already unstable US trade relations with China and India, which are the largest buyers of Russian energy, the media write.

Some Democratic lawmakers oppose the bill, warning that Trump could use it as legal justification for imposing broad new tariffs.
