At the beginning of the full-scale war with the Russian Federation, Ukraine persistently asked Poland to transfer MiG-29 fighters, but the US position prevented this.
This was stated by Polish President Andrzej Duda, Censor.NET reports with reference to Polish Radio .
“Ukraine literally asked us for MiGs. This was constantly heard during my conversations with Volodymyr Zelensky. We turned to our allies with the question of whether it was possible to transfer the aircraft as a NATO member country – and there was a blockade from the Americans,” Duda said .
The President clarified that Poland received signals about a ban on transferring not only fighter jets, but also tanks or other heavy assault vehicles to Ukraine.
“First of all, it was about the MiG-29. On the other hand, Ukrainians came to us with complaints because they heard from the Americans: contact the Poles. And the impression was that it was Poland that did not want to hand over these aircraft,” the president explained.
Duda also stated that Poland was the first to transfer heavy weapons to Ukraine and called it “the salvation of Ukraine to a huge extent.”
