Among the released civilians are those who were held by the Russians since 2014, 2016 and 2017.

A new prisoner exchange with Russia took place. 84 Ukrainians returned today, August 14, from Russian captivity. This was reported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his Telegram channel .

“We are returning Ukrainians home, to Ukraine. A new exchange, 84 people. These are both military and civilians. Almost all of them need medical care, significant rehabilitation. Among the civilians released today are those who were held by the Russians since 2014, 2016 and 2017. Among the military released today are the defenders of Mariupol,” Zelensky noted.

The President expressed gratitude to everyone who helps us continue to free Ukrainian prisoners.

“Thank you to our team – everyone in the Coordination Headquarters, the Main Intelligence Directorate, the Office, in the special services, who are working to bring our people back. Thank you to the UAE for helping with this exchange. And most importantly, thank you to our soldiers who replenish the exchange fund for Ukraine on the front line every week. The courage and effectiveness of our units on the front line is also the opportunity to bring our people home. There will be more exchanges,” he emphasized.

The youngest person released today is 26 years old, the oldest is 74, reported the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets .

“The peculiarity of this return is that it was possible to release 51 civilians illegally detained or sentenced to long terms: among them are men and women. These are political prisoners, citizens of various categories, including doctors. Some Ukrainians were in captivity since 2015-2016. There are also those whom Russia detained after 2022 in the Ukrainian military-territorial unit,” the ombudsman said.

According to him, in general, all citizens have acute illnesses, diseases and need medical care. As for the returned military, these are soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the State Border Service of Ukraine.

“There are those who were captured in the first months of the full-scale invasion. A significant part of them are officers. The oldest liberated person is 49 years old, the youngest is 25 years old. The defenders are wounded and sick,” Lubinets noted.

The Coordination Headquarters notes that this is the 67th prisoner exchange since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. They have released more details. It is reported that of the 33 military personnel released today, 10 are officers.

“The peculiarity of today’s exchange is that it was possible to free Ukrainian civilians and soldiers who were detained in the temporarily occupied territories even before the full-scale invasion and illegally sentenced to long prison terms – from 10 to 18 years. One of those released spent 4,013 days in captivity – he was enslaved in the Donetsk region back in 2014,” the Coordination Headquarters noted.

In particular, among the Ukrainian civilians released today is a 27-year-old guy who was illegally deprived of his freedom by the occupiers in 2016. At that time, he was only 18 years old.

“Two pairs of siblings who were held in captivity from March and April 2022 are returning from Russian captivity,” the Headquarters reported.

The released Ukrainians will receive all necessary medical care. All those released will undergo a medical examination, receive treatment, be provided with everything necessary for the first time, receive appropriate payments and undergo rehabilitation and reintegration into society after a long isolation in Russian captivity.Read also:
