This week, President Donald Trump renewed his call on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to travel to Moscow to meet with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, despite repeated refusals in the past, as the United States seeks to restart peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, Bloomberg reports .
The publication reported that Zelenskyy rejected the offer. Sources familiar with the Ukrainian president’s position noted that Trump’s raising of the issue irritated him.
When asked by journalists when he would visit Moscow, Zelensky replied, “By rocket,” before swearing.
The article notes that Zelensky and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held separate meetings with Trump administration officials in New York this week.
“Amid soaring global diesel prices, the US called on both sides to agree to a ceasefire against attacks on each other’s energy facilities, but neither side agreed to it,” the publication reported.
Zelenskyy stated on Friday that technical peace talks between Ukraine and Russia would likely take place in the United Arab Emirates, although the US has not yet proposed a specific date.
European officials say Trump and his team responded positively to their lobbying efforts to support Ukraine before winter sets in. They also noted that Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy was generally positive.
According to the publication, Trump has not yet decided whether he will send additional air defense systems to Ukraine this winter, as the US is facing its own shortages due to the war with Iran, but he has agreed to grant Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot missiles.
Zelensky said on Friday that Trump told him he had made a final decision this week, although he did not specify a delivery timeline.
Production is not expected to begin for at least a year, so it will not address Ukraine’s pressing need to protect critical infrastructure from Russian attacks during the colder months.
The publication notes that Trump’s proposal to meet with Russia came the same week that Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States had invited Putin to attend the Group of 20 summit in Florida in December, which drew criticism in Europe.
