During a meeting at the White House, US President Donald Trump urged Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept Russia’s terms for ending the war, warning that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin would “destroy” Ukraine if it did not, the Financial Times reported , citing its sources.
According to the publication’s sources, the meeting repeatedly degenerated into a “shouting match,” during which Trump “constantly swore.”
They noted that the US president refused to look at maps of the front lines in Ukraine and insisted that Zelensky hand over all of Donbas to Putin, and repeatedly repeated the points the Russian dictator had made during their phone conversation the previous day.
“While Ukraine ultimately succeeded in persuading Trump to support a freeze on the current front line, the acrimonious meeting appeared to reflect Trump’s fluidity in his position on the war and his willingness to back Putin’s maximalist demands,” the FT emphasized.
As European officials told reporters, during the meeting, Trump repeated many of the Russian dictator’s points verbatim, despite the fact that they contradicted his own recent statements about Russia’s weakness.
One European official said Trump told Zelensky that the Ukrainian president must make a deal or face destruction.
The official added that Trump told Zelensky that he would lose the war and warned:
“If [Putin] wants, he will destroy you.”
Another source told the publication that at one point during the meeting, the American leader tossed aside maps of Ukraine’s battlefield.
Meanwhile, three other European officials confirmed that Trump spent much of the meeting lecturing Zelensky, repeating Putin’s arguments regarding the conflict and urging him to accept Russia’s offer.
Zelenskyy was “very negative” after the meeting, one official said, adding that European leaders “were not optimistic, but were pragmatic in planning next steps.”
