US President Donald Trump plans to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in person next week, The New York Times reports .
It is noted that after a possible meeting with the Russian dictator, Trump would also like to hold trilateral talks with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump outlined his plans in a phone call with European leaders on Wednesday, the sources said. The meetings will be limited to the three men, without their European counterparts.
“European leaders, who have been trying to play a coordinating role in meetings aimed at ending the violence between Russia and Ukraine while also supporting their European neighbor, appear to have accepted Trump’s words,” said one of the people familiar with the conversation.
It was not immediately clear whether Putin or Zelensky agreed to the plan Trump outlined. But Zelensky was present on Trump’s call with European leaders. The call also included the British leader, the German chancellor, and the NATO secretary general, as well as Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Witkoff.
