The United States will not sell missiles directly to Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump stated that he might approve the transfer of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine if Russia continues the war. He added, however, that he might first discuss the matter with Vladimir Putin, as such actions would be a “step forward” in the war.
Trump also stated that the United States would not sell missiles to Ukraine directly, but would provide them to NATO, which could then offer them to the Ukrainians, Politico writes .
“Yes, I could tell him (Putin) that if the war is not over, we may well do it,” he said. “We may not do it, but we can do it… Do they want Tomahawks flying in their direction? I don’t think so.”
He emphasized that he plans to first discuss the Tomahawk issue with Russia.
“I think I could talk to Russia about this, to be honest. I told President Zelenskyy about this because Tomahawks are a new step in aggression. You understand.”
This comment by the president is his strongest position to date on the possibility of selling Tomahawk missiles. Trump previously stated that he wanted to know what Ukraine planned to do with the Tomahawk missiles because he did not want an escalation of war between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump also praised Ukraine’s resilience in the war.
“I give Ukraine credit for doing such a good job. They’re very good fighters. I think President Putin would look great if he could get this resolved, and I think he will. If he doesn’t, it won’t do him any good,” Trump emphasized.
Tomahawk missiles for Ukraine
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that if the US transfers Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine , strikes will be carried out exclusively against Russian military targets.
When asked whether the American leader approved the transfer of missiles to Ukraine, Zelensky replied that work on this issue is ongoing.
