One of the most prominent conservative activists in the United States, Charlie Kirk, was shot at a mass event in Utah and is hospitalized in critical condition, Fox News reports .
Video from the scene shows Kirk shot in the neck. According to preliminary information, the shooter has been detained. He fired the shot while Kirk was giving an anti-transgender speech.
The activist was scheduled to speak at Utah Valley University on Wednesday as part of his “Back to America” tour. His appearances have sparked protests and petitions from student groups critical of his views.
US President Donald Trump reacted to the attack.
“We should all pray for Charlie Kirk, who was shot. A great guy from head to toe. May the Lord bless him,” he wrote.
Who is Charlie Kirk?
Charlie Kirk is a podcast host with millions of followers on social media. He is a Donald Trump supporter; he is best known as the founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA. He comes to universities and debates with supporters of the US Democratic Party, fighting the “leftist agenda.”
Kirk is also skeptical about supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia. He has repeatedly expressed doubts about the advisability of military aid to Kyiv and criticized US policy in this direction.
