Restrictions have been lifted for Belarusian airlines and aircraft associated with Lukashenko.

On Tuesday, November 4, the US Treasury Department eased some sanctions against Belarus. Specifically, restrictions on the national airline were lifted and operations related to Alexander Lukashenko’s presidential plane were permitted, Reuters reports .

The publication notes that this step is the latest in a warming of relations between the US and Belarus. In September, Belarus released 52 prisoners following a call by US President Donald Trump .

In exchange, Belarus received a promise to lift sanctions against Belavia, the national airline of Belarus. This decision is said to allow the airline to purchase and service components for its aircraft.

Easing sanctions against airlines and aircraft

The publication also states that the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control officially lifted sanctions on an aircraft operated by this airline. According to preliminary data, the agency reportedly used it by high-ranking officials and members of Alexander Lukashenko’s family.

In addition, a general license was issued that allows certain operations related to the use of three previously authorized aircraft by Lukashenko or the Slavkali company, which is associated with the Belarusian presidential government.

The US Treasury Department clarified that the license covers a Boeing 737 aircraft owned by the Belarusian government, which was used as the presidential aircraft, as well as another aircraft that was part of the presidential fleet. A third helicopter was used to transport the Belarusian president from Minsk to his country residence.

At the same time, as the publication notes, a number of sanctions imposed by the US against Belarus in connection with the 2020 presidential election, which Washington called fraudulent, as well as Minsk’s support for Russia, remain in place. Specifically, restrictions against Lukashenko and his family members have not been lifted.
