He noted that these are emergency decisions initiated by the Ministry of Defense, which will eventually be replaced by more comprehensive ones.

SpaceX has begun taking the first countermeasures against the occupiers’ use of Starlink terminals for drone strikes in Ukraine.

This was reported by Sergei “Flash” Beskrestnov, an expert in electronic warfare and communications systems and advisor to the Minister of Defense, on Telegram . “Many users of the Starlink satellite communications system in Ukraine are already observing the first countermeasures that SpaceX has taken at the request of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense,” Flash reported.

He noted that he cannot publicly announce everything that has already been done, is being done, and will be done to protect Ukrainians, both military and civilian, as well as infrastructure facilities, from the threat posed by Russian attack UAVs.

“I want to emphasize that the current decisions are temporary (or, to put it another way, emergency) and will be replaced by a comprehensive, well-thought-out solution, which will take time,” the Defense Minister’s advisor explained.

Flash noted that it is high time to collect all the data on the military personnel who use SpaceX services.

“There have been such attempts before, but many soldiers using volunteer Starlinks and personal Starlinks were reluctant to provide information to command. What if the commander takes it away or a new one doesn’t give it to them?” Flash noted.

In this regard, the advisor to the Minister of Defense noted that the department will definitely come up with a way to collect this information.

“SpaceX is involved in the process and is assisting the Ministry of Defense specialists. I apologize again to those temporarily affected by these measures, but these are very important and necessary actions for the country’s security right now,” the specialist noted.

  1. Updated at 11:18 p.m. Russian “war correspondents” report that SpaceX has taken emergency measures to prevent the occupiers from using Starlink drones by monitoring the terminals’ speed.

“As part of the countermeasure against Russian drones with Starlink terminals, a speed limit of 75-90 km/h has been introduced, at which point the terminal ceases operation. The restriction applies to all terminals at once, so both Russian and Ukrainian drones, which reach significantly higher speeds, are unable to fly,” reports the Russian Z-channel “Military Informant.”

According to the Russians, “white lists” of Ukrainian terminals are currently being developed so that only those Starlinks that have been previously entered into a special database can fly over Ukraine.

    • This looks like good news and a good first step until they can control the panels individually. This is also a good example of getting cooperation through persuasion instead of demonization 🙂
