Eight members of the foreign crew have been taken to hospitals in Odessa. Five more people are being sought.
The Russian occupation army launched three missiles at the civilian cargo ship GOLDEN LEO, which was moving out of the combat zone after loading. At least five sailors were killed, the fate of part of the crew is unknown.
As an UNIAN correspondent reports , at around 4:00 p.m. monitoring channels warned that Russian military aircraft had appeared over the Black Sea, so missile strikes should be expected. After some time, explosions began. Eyewitnesses reported on social networks that the occupiers had hit a civilian ship, which began to sink. A video of a burning ship appeared on TG channels.
Later, the Ukrainian Navy announced that Russia had committed another act of terrorism in the Black Sea – it struck the civilian dry cargo ship GOLDEN LEO (flagged Guinea-Bissau, owned by Turkey) with three Kh-59/Kh-69 cruise missiles. This happened at the moment when the ship was moving out of the combat zone with a cargo of grain.
The hit occurred in the area of the starboard side of the superstructure, a fire broke out on board. “As a result of the impact, 5 people died. The fate of 5 more crew members is unknown, the search is ongoing. The technical condition of the vessel is being clarified,” the Ukrainian Navy said.
Units of the Ukrainian Navy and the Maritime Search and Rescue Service were involved in providing assistance. As of 8:30 p.m., eight crew members had been evacuated to one of the hospitals in Odessa.
“This is another targeted strike by Russia on an unarmed civilian vessel under a foreign flag, which did not pose any military threat. The attack is an act of terror against peaceful navigation and a gross violation of international humanitarian law,” the military sailors emphasize.
Updated at 22:50. As reported by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga on the social network X , a Ukrainian pilot died as a result of the attack on the civilian vessel GOLDEN LEO. Also on board were citizens of Syria and India.
“A Ukrainian marine pilot was killed, as well as four crew members, eight crew members were evacuated, and five are still considered missing,” Sibiga said.
