BREAKING NEWS: Russia strikes Chornomorets football stadium in Odessa

One person was injured – a woman received shrapnel wounds.

The occupying Russian army attacked Odessa , resulting in damage to the Chernomorets football stadium, located in the Taras Shevchenko Central Park of Culture and Recreation.

As an UNIAN correspondent reports, this afternoon during an air alert, monitoring channels warned that Russian “Banderoli” were flying from the Black Sea, after which explosions were heard in the city.

“The sports infrastructure was damaged. Preliminary, there are victims. We are clarifying the details,” Lysak noted.

The head of the OVA, Oleg Kiper, clarified that the Russians attacked the civilian infrastructure of Odessa, in particular, the Chornomorets football stadium in the city center was damaged as a result of the strike.

“The roof, glazing, and stands were damaged. According to preliminary information, unfortunately, one person was injured,” Kiper reported.

Spokesperson for the Odessa Regional Prosecutor’s Office Inna Verba told UNIAN that a 28-year-old woman was injured.

“She suffered multiple shrapnel wounds,” Verba said.

Local Telegram channels have released a video showing the first minutes after the plane arrived at the stadium. It is clear that there is a huge hole in the roof and the fan area is damaged.

Chornomorets Stadium

The Chornomorets Stadium was opened on May 18, 1936, and after the last complete reconstruction on November 19, 2011. The number of spectator seats is over 34 thousand. The glazing area of the stadium building facade is 13,000 sq. m, the height of the stadium from the field level to its highest point is 31 m. The total area of all levels of the arena is 83,289 sq. m, 78% of the stands are protected from precipitation by the stadium roof.

According to open source data, from November 19, 2011 to May 21, 2020, the stadium was owned by Imexbank, and from July 2020, by Allrise Capital (USA).

Russian attacks on the Odessa region

As UNIAN reported, in the Odessa region, Russia attacked the civilian ship MERA QUEEN under the flag of Guinea-Bissau, killing a Ukrainian sailor and injuring several others. According to the Odessa regional prosecutor’s office, the invaders attacked a civilian ship transporting wheat with a jet attack drone. A 24-year-old Ukrainian citizen, the ship’s engine driver, was killed. Among the injured were two more Ukrainian sailors, men aged 44 and 64.
