The aggressor country joined this convention as a member of the Council of Europe, from which it was expelled in 2022.

The aggressor country Russia plans to withdraw from the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

This was reported by the Russian propaganda agency TASS . The Russian government made such a proposal to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

“The government has proposed to Putin to denounce another convention to which Moscow joined as a member of the Council of Europe. This is the convention for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” the report says.

UNIAN reference. Russia has been a member of the Council of Europe since 1996. On February 25, 2022, the Council of Europe suspended Russia’s membership in the organization after a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On March 16 of the same year, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a decision to immediately expel Russia from the organization due to armed aggression against Ukraine.

  1. This is only a symbolic measure … a middle finger to the world, so to speak. Those creatures never adhered to the convention anyway. Torture has been practiced all along and in increasing numbers for years.
